From Brighton’s Naturist Beach to BGHS

Chasing the Heat

Transitioning from Brighton Naturist Beach to the warm sanctuary of BGHS is definitely a seasonal landmark. There is a distinct, bittersweet moment in Brighton when you realize the summer has passed. One day you’re lying on the pebbles of the world famous Brighton Beach, completely unburdened, letting the summer sun and the salty breeze hit your skin. The next, a sharp autumnal wind rolls off the English Channel, and suddenly, the thought of stripping off by the waves loses its charm.

But for those of us who thrive in a textile-free lifestyle, the end of summer doesn't mean it’s time to cover up and hibernate. It simply means our sanctuary shifts inland. Like the murmuration of starlings round the Pier, those in the know head just a little bit inland and step inside the warm, comforting walls of Bristol Gardens Health Spa. (BGHS). Bringing likeminded people back together to collectively escape the cold pebbles and biting winds, all looking forward to a winter of shared warmth and friendship.

The journey indoors brings an immediate shift from the chilly coastal air to the thick, enveloping warmth of the spa, it is pure bliss. You shed the layers of autumn clothing at the door and trade the unpredictable British weather for BGHS’s red towel and absolute, controlled comfort.

Don’t get me wrong. There is something magical about the raw, natural element of the Brighton coast in winter. The burn of the cold sea and the squeals of the brave who plunge, is now the norm when walking along. There are saunas spotted almost everywhere nowadays too, all there to warm your cockles so to speak. I myself am a sea swimmer and completely engage with the dip and sauna culture that has popped up by almost every body of water or bath tub, but it can feel a little rushed sometimes.

I want to take my time warming, cooling, steaming, plunging and luxuriating and then I want to do it all again. I want to be enveloped in heat and forget the outside world for a while.

The downstairs wet area at BGHS is the perfect cure. It’s an immersive circuit of heat and water therapy, designed to completely melt away the seasonal blues:

Steam rooms infused with aromatic eucalyptus oil, the twin mosaic-tiled rooms opening up your lungs and clearing the mind. It’s a deep, heavy heat that instantly makes you forget the grey skies outside.

Then there is the intense reassuringly constant heat of the dry, traditional pine-clad saunas with thyme and eucalyptus essences resetting my mood.

The fully immersive cool pools, hot tubs and bubbling Jacuzzi makes for a therapeutic deep delight.

Best of all I’m not restricted by costumes but free to feel the full benefits of which there are many that I shall talk about in my next blog.

What makes the textile free, naturist community so special is the lack of judgement and the collective understanding of why it’s so special, and that doesn't disappear even when you leave.

BGHS functions beautifully as a social hub. Whether you're relaxing downstairs in the water, chatting with regulars in the lounges, soaking up some winter vitamin D on the sundeck, browsing the library, or heading up to the warmer, drier rest areas, the atmosphere remains entirely relaxed and liberating. It’s a place where nakedness is entirely normalized and everyone respects the simple, shared boundary of comfort and wellness.

Summer might be in the rearview mirror, but the journey indoors brings its own kind of magic. There is a unique comfort in listening to the rain beat against a glass roof while you are completely warm, relaxed, and wrapped in nothing but a towel.

So, don't mourn the end of the beach days. Grab your washbag, head over to BGHS and embrace the steam, saunas, and total indoor comfort.

Summer hasn't ended—it's just moved inside.

 See you soon.
